To Data Reframed from LA Tech4Good
Our first launch party was tons of fun!
35 folks gathered in late November at Suehiro DTLA for the first of our launch parties. Here's some of what we heard:
"Good turnout. Fun to chat with like-minded folks."
"Lots of people conversing and sharing contacts. It was a good time. The bar staff were really cool."
"2 people from my organization were able to attend so that was nice."
"It was a great time and I had a lot of questions for when is the next event."
"It was a good to celebrate this moment and continue driving momentum forward."
An excerpt from Steering Committee member Cindy Lin’s remarks
“In this age of AI and algorithms, the whole of the data lifecycle from how it is collected, to how it is stored, interpreted, and shared, often is done with a lack of criticality of how existing societal biases get baked in, thus exacerbating existing disparities. At Data Reframed, we want to not only increase awareness of how essential it is to look at data through multiple frames, but also how to provide the skills and tools to assess and then to remove inequities from the data stack once they are discovered.
To that end, this is not only a launch party, but also an important moment for us where we are looking to you for your support. Our goal is to distinguish ourselves as leaders that have consolidated the thinking around data equity and ethics and its implementation. We want to build that out in a format(s), whether that be through training, frameworks, data equity index, certifications or more; teaching it in a way that people and organizations can apply data equity to their respective fields.
We are currently looking for funding sources so we can dedicate real resources into developing and articulating this philosophy, because if you didn’t know, we are currently completely volunteer run. If you know of grants or funding sources that would align with our needs, or have feedback on the overall vision, please connect with a member of the steering committee through this email.
And comments from Kathryn Wolterman, volunteer facilitator and CGI partner
“It seems like there is a lot of opportunity to better educate the public on how to parse the data that is currently provided by government entities, and to help non-profits present their data in a way that helps the government departments and citizens alike understand the quantitative and qualitative success measures of their programs.”
Announcement October 24, 2024
We’re excited to announce that LA Tech4Good is now officially Data Reframed! This change has been a long time coming, inspired by the active participation and enthusiasm we've seen from our partners and workshop participants across the country. It’s time to drop geography from our name and continue forward with our mission.
The name Data Reframed reflects our mission to teach equitable data practices, encouraging practitioners to reframe data in ways that support justice, ethics and community.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to equitable data practices. We look forward to the journey ahead!
