How Data Impacts My Life: Social Media – from Data 4 Good

Hear from experts on the topics of social media accountability, user privacy, and media manipulation — and what YOU can do about it.

About this event

The Facebook Files reminded us that the problem with social media isn’t just what users post — it’s what platforms decide to do with that content.

Disinformation, hateful speech, societal polarization, and electoral manipulation are just some of the more visible risks and harms that arise from companies controlling so much of our personal data. From our Google searches to our Instagram posts, Facebook updates, tweets, and Amazon purchases, our online activity collectively fuels today's digital economy.

In this session, we’ll hear from experts on the topics of social media accountability, user privacy, media manipulation, and disinformation. Finally, we’ll discuss how these topics impact your life and what YOU can do about it.

 Specifically, we’ll focus on:
• The many ways in which personal data is tracked, collected, and commercialized to fuel online advertising.
• The political and social impact of mass personal data collection on individuals and societies.
• Practical tips for regaining a degree of control over your personal information, and how you can help make a difference in your community.
